AAU Hosts British Council Delegation to Advance Higher Education Access in Sub Saharan Africa
July 17, 2026Africa’s ambition to transform education over the next decade will depend not only on what happens in classrooms, but also on the strength of the institutions that prepare teachers, generate knowledge, develop advanced skills, and drive innovation.
For the Association of African Universities, this places African universities at the heart of the continent’s education transformation agenda. The AAU has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the African Union Decade of Accelerated Action for the Transformation of Education and Skills Development in Africa (2025–2034), positioning its continental network of universities to turn Africa’s education commitments into institutional action, research, innovation, capacity development, and partnerships.
The Decade represents a sustained continental push to build more inclusive, equitable, and quality education systems while developing the knowledge and skills required for Africa’s transformation. It provides an overarching framework for advancing key continental strategies, including the Continental Education Strategy for Africa (CESA 2026–2035), the Continental Technical and Vocational Education and Training Strategy, and the Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy for Africa.
AAU’s response is anchored in the conviction that universities have a much wider role to play in Africa’s education ecosystem. Beyond educating students, universities prepare the teachers and educational leaders who shape learning across the education system. They generate research and innovation, develop advanced skills, support policy development, and provide knowledge-based solutions to development challenges.
Harnessing these capabilities is central to AAU’s Strategic Implementation Framework for supporting the Decade. The framework identifies six priority areas through which the AAU intends to mobilise higher education:
- Strengthening university capacity for education transformation;
- Transforming teacher education and the teaching profession;
- Advancing research, innovation and knowledge solutions;
- Accelerating digital transformation and artificial intelligence readiness;
- Strengthening skills development, employability and university–industry linkages; and
- Promoting quality assurance, recognition and mobility of qualifications.
Particularly significant is teacher education. Recognising teachers as the foundation of successful education systems, the AAU intends to strengthen collaboration among faculties of education and promote modernised curricula, digital pedagogy, STEM teacher preparation, inclusive education and continuous professional development.
Research and innovation will provide another important pathway. The AAU envisages African universities increasingly generating evidence and solutions around challenges ranging from teacher shortages and learning outcomes to digital education, artificial intelligence, education financing, skills development and inclusion.
The ambition extends beyond articulating priorities. AAU’s framework proposes mechanisms for translating them into action, including continental networks and initiatives focused on teacher education, education research, digital higher education, skills transformation and quality enhancement. It also envisages a coordination mechanism for implementation, partnerships, monitoring and documentation of progress.
Through its relationships with member universities, regional university associations, national university commissions, and higher education councils, AAU intends to facilitate collaboration, peer learning and the adaptation of continental priorities to different institutional and national contexts.
Partnership will be equally critical. Governments, development partners, international organisations, the private sector and knowledge networks are envisaged as part of the broader ecosystem needed to mobilise expertise, resources and innovation for implementation.
Better research can inform better education policy. Stronger links with industry can produce more relevant skills. Digital transformation can expand access and improve learning. And deeper collaboration among African institutions can strengthen the continent’s capacity to generate its own knowledge and solutions. With these in mind, the AAU has committed to working with the African Union Commission and other stakeholders to mobilise the knowledge, innovation, partnerships and institutional capacity of African higher education in support of the Decade.
Africa has defined an ambitious destination for its education systems; the task now is to turn that ambition into transformation. By mobilising the continent’s universities as engines of knowledge, skills, and innovation, the AAU is helping position higher education to play its part in making the Decade count.
