AAU Unveils AFRID Network’s Digital Platform to Revolutionize Research Collaboration Across Africa
July 21, 2025The Association of African Universities (AAU) has returned to its birthplace, Rabat, Morocco, for its historic 16th Quadrennial General Conference, 58 years after its founding. Running from 21–25 July 2025, the conference has drawn over 400 higher education leaders, policymakers, industry pioneers, and global partners to shape a bold agenda for Africa’s universities under the theme: Shaping the Future of Higher Education for Innovation and Sustainable Development in Africa.
Hosted by the University Mohammed VI Polytechnic (UM6P), the opening ceremony celebrated Africa’s academic resilience and ambition as well as Morocco’s key contribution to bridging tradition and modernity through green energy innovation and digital inclusion. Morocco’s Minister for Higher Education, Scientific Research, and Innovation, Hon. Azzedine El Midaoui, who officially launched the conference, described it as a strategic platform for African cooperation in education, research, and innovation toward sustainable continental progress. “The Kingdom of Morocco views African cooperation in higher education, scientific research, and innovation as a strategic pillar for advancing human capital across our nations and continent.”
AAU’s Governing Board President, Prof. Bakri Osman Saeed, urged institutions to transcend traditional boundaries. “From AI-driven curricula to climate-resilient research, African universities must become agile, inclusive, and globally competitive,” he charged the gathering of academics. Adding to this, AAU Secretary-General Prof. Olusola Bandele Oyewole outlined four strategic shifts—embedding innovation, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, investing in human capital, and strengthening global partnerships—which, he argued, were vital for Africa’s higher education renewal.
In the lead-up to the main event, pre-conference workshops from July 18–20 addressed critical issues such as cybersecurity, AI integration, and policy-driven research collaborations. Partner-led side events and a vibrant exhibition further set the stage for dynamic knowledge sharing and networking.
The conference brings together leading stakeholders like the African Union, World Bank, UNESCO, Mastercard Foundation, and OBREAL Global. Together, they are tackling themes ranging from sustainable funding and governance reforms to indigenous knowledge systems and higher education’s role in achieving the SDGs.
With nine subthemes driving scientific sessions, discussions are exploring how Africa’s universities can equip students for the future, strengthen credit transfer systems, and integrate cutting-edge technologies for a globally competitive edge.
As the 16th General Conference unfolds, it marks not just a homecoming but a renewed commitment to transforming Africa’s higher education sector. With robust dialogue, innovative partnerships, and actionable strategies, AAU and its partners are laying the groundwork for universities that can lead Africa—and the world—into a sustainable and knowledge-driven future. As Prof. Oyewole aptly captures it, “this is a defining moment for African higher education,” charging all and sundry to join in building the universities that Africa needs.
