AfriQAN Elects New Executive Leadership to Drive Continental Quality Assurance Agenda

The African Quality Assurance Network (AfriQAN) has elected a new leadership team to steer the continental body through its next term, following the successful conclusion of its 14th General Assembly and Conference.

Dr. Joseph Letele of Lesotho assumes the role of President, with Prof. João da Silva of Cabo Verde as Vice President, and Ms. Bertha Njembo of Namibia serving as the Treasurer. The elections were conducted in a spirit of transparency and collaboration, reflecting the membership’s collective commitment to advancing quality assurance across African higher education.

The newly elected Board members bring a wealth of experience and deep expertise in quality assurance and higher education governance. Their appointment signals the confidence of the AfriQAN membership in their capacity to provide strategic direction, foster regional collaboration, and champion the Network’s mission of embedding a robust culture of quality across the continent.

Held at the African Union Commission in Addis Ababa on 21-22 July 2026,  the 14th General Assembly and Conference was convened under the theme “Continental Collaboration for Quality Assurance in Africa.” The gathering brought together quality assurance leaders, higher education institutions, policymakers, and international partners to deliberate on the future of quality assurance in African higher education and to chart a collective path forward.

The General Assembly extended its appreciation to all members who participated in the electoral process and reaffirmed the Network’s shared resolve to strengthen quality assurance systems, support capacity development, and contribute to the harmonization of higher education across Africa.

AfriQAN extends its warm congratulations to the newly elected President, Vice President, and Treasurer, and wishes them every success as they lead the Network in advancing excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement in African higher education.
