AAU and KCA University Partner to Host COREVIP 2027 and AAU@60 Celebration
May 21, 2026The Association of African Universities (AAU) Governing Board convened its 86th session from 12–13 February 2026 at the Association’s Secretariat in Accra, Ghana, bringing together a distinguished group of vice-chancellors and other higher education leaders from across the continent.
The meeting provided a critical platform for reviewing institutional performance and aligning ongoing activities with AAU’s strategic priorities. Key discussions focused on advancing quality assurance, research excellence, digital transformation, and continental collaboration- all of which are essential to strengthening Africa’s higher education landscape and global competitiveness.
Board members also reviewed the Secretary-General’s management report, assessed progress on previous decisions, and received updates on flagship programmes and special initiatives implemented in line with the AAU’s strategic plan and key priority areas. Preparations towards the 2027 Conference of Rectors, Vice-Chancellors, and Presidents of African Universities (COREVIP) were also discussed, alongside issues related to institutional sustainability, financial governance, and strategic partnerships.
AAU’s Governing Board is chaired by its President, Prof. Kenneth Kamwi Matengu, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Namibia, with a continental representation of members, reflecting the Association’s commitment to inclusive, continent-wide leadership in shaping the future of higher education.

As its highest policy and oversight body, the AAU’s Governing Board plays a central role in ensuring accountability and guiding the implementation of its strategic vision. In line with this commitment, the AAU published its 2025 Annual Report, including financial statements and a compendium of key projects on its website.
The session concluded with Board members participating in the launch of the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World Rankings: Sub-Saharan Africa 2026.
Through sustained strategic oversight and collaborative leadership, the AAU Governing Board continues to reinforce the Association’s role as a driving force for transformation in Africa’s higher education sector.
