Accra, Ghana- (October 1, 2025)- The Association of African Universities (AAU) is pleased to announce that the 2025 Africa Universities’ Day celebration, will be commemorated on 12th November 2025, alongside a weeklong series of events from November 10-14, 2025.
This year’s celebration will be held under the theme “The Future of Learning in Africa: Technology, Innovation, Skills and Inclusive Growth.” The theme underscores the urgent need for African universities to redefine their roles as engines of development characterized by innovation, inclusivity and future-ready skills development.
The celebration will bring together Ministers of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Vice chancellors, University leaders, industry players, researchers and innovators, development partners, thought leaders, students as well as civil society to engage in high-level dialogues and impactful activities aimed at transforming the higher education trajectory in alignment with globally evolving standards and best practices for the continent’s development.
The weeklong celebration seeks to catalyze a continent-wide transformation of Africa’s higher education, making it more innovative, inclusive and directly responsive to the continent’s needs.
Specifically, the Africa Universities’ celebration aims to:
- Create awareness on the role of African universities in shaping the continent’s future of learning.
- Promote dialogue on technology, innovation, and skills as drivers of Africa’s socio-economic transformation.
- Strengthen collaboration among universities, governments, industry, and civil society.
- Advocate for inclusive and equitable access to quality higher education in Africa.
- Inspire African youth to embrace innovation and technology as tools for development.
“Africa’s future prosperity and global competitiveness will be determined by the learning that happens today in its universities and innovation hubs. This demands a fundamental reimagining of higher education—not incremental change, but a bold leap towards a system defined by its agility, relevance, and unwavering commitment to African prosperity and empowerment of the youth. Our universities must become the powerhouses that fuel this transformation, leveraging technology and championing inclusivity to equip a new generation with the critical skills, innovative spirit, and entrepreneurial drive to solve our most pressing challenges and seize our greatest opportunities..”- Professor Olusola Bandele Oyewole, AAU Secretary General.
The celebration will feature high-level discussions, youth-driven innovation showcases and continent-wide university-led activities. Highlights include High-Level Opening Symposium with keynote addresses from the African Union and leading global thought leaders, Vice-Chancellors’ Roundtable on transforming higher education from rhetoric to experiential learning, and Student Ideathon Pitch Event where young innovators propose solutions to African challenges.
These activities are expected to yield significant outcomes such as a Call-to-Action Framework with concrete recommendations for curriculum reform and inclusive education, strengthened policy commitments and partnerships between governments, universities, and industry and increased visibility of African universities’ contributions to Agenda 2063 and their role in the Continental Education Strategy for Africa (CESA 2026–2035).
Beyond the AAU-led activities, universities across the continent will also commemorate the Day through seminars, debates, exhibitions, and public engagement events aligned with the theme.

- Day 3 Wednesday, 12 November – Main Africa Universities’ Day Celebration (Hybrid: Online & Physical (University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA Auditorium, West Wing) 10:00 GMT/1:00 EAT)
- Day 4 Thursday, 13 November – AAU Regional Offices and AAU Partners Sessions (Online)
