Advancing Quality and Trust in African Higher Education: The Role of Continental Quality Assurance Standards
October 14, 2026The newly elected President of the African Quality Assurance Network (AfriQAN), Dr. Moeketsi Joseph Letele, concluded the 2026 AfriQAN Annual Conference with a strong call for collective action to strengthen quality assurance as a driver of excellence and transformation in African higher education.
In his closing address, Dr. Letele emphasized that quality assurance is a continuous culture of improvement that must evolve to meet the demands of digital transformation, technology-enhanced learning, and emerging trends in higher education. He stressed the importance of modernizing quality assurance systems through innovation and continuous capacity building to ensure African institutions remain globally competitive.
The President highlighted the need to develop harmonized quality assurance frameworks, including African Standards and Guidelines for Transnational Higher Education, to promote trust, facilitate the recognition of qualifications, support student mobility, and advance the African Higher Education and Research Space.

Presenting the priorities of the newly elected Executive Board, Dr. Letele pledged to strengthen AfriQAN’s governance, deepen collaboration with continental quality assurance initiatives, expand membership, promote knowledge sharing and capacity building, review key institutional frameworks, and reinforce the AfriQAN Secretariat through a dedicated action plan.
He further called on quality assurance agencies, higher education institutions, governments, industry, students, and development partners to work together to achieve the aspirations of Agenda 2063 and build a strong culture of quality across the continent.
Concluding his remarks, Dr. Letele reminded participants that the true success of the conference would be measured not by the discussions held, but by the actions implemented afterwards. He expressed appreciation to the African Union, development partners, the outgoing Executive Board, the AfriQAN Secretariat, speakers, and participants for their contributions to a successful conference and encouraged all stakeholders to continue working together to build a credible, inclusive, and internationally competitive African higher education system.
