At a time when global development is increasingly defined by innovation, sustainability, and inclusive growth, collaboration is no longer optional but strategic. Nowhere is this more evident than in the evolving partnership between Africa and Europe, where shared priorities are driving a new era of entrepreneurial cooperation.
Central to this momentum is the African Union–European Union partnership, anchored in the AU–EU Innovation Agenda (2023–2033). This ambitious framework is not merely a policy document but a blueprint for transforming how both regions collaborate on research, innovation, and enterprise development.
One of its most dynamic instruments is the Africa–Europe Innovation Platform (AEIP)—a growing ecosystem where ideas, expertise, and partnerships converge. More than a network, the AEIP serves as a multi-stakeholder engine for co-creation. By connecting innovators, researchers, policymakers, and institutions across both continents, the AEIP creates the conditions for meaningful collaboration on shared challenges.
From entrepreneurship development to climate innovation, the platform enables knowledge exchange across borders, capacity building for institutions and individuals, and co-creation of solutions grounded in real-world needs. In doing so, the AEIP is helping to shape innovation systems that are at the same time globally competitive and locally considered.
Central to this effort is the leadership of the Association of African Universities (AAU).
As the leading representative body for higher education institutions across Africa, the AAU plays a pivotal role in translating the ambitions of the AEIP into tangible outcomes that are both strategic and operational, driving:
- Continental coordination of innovative activities
- Capacity-building initiatives for universities and other stakeholders
- Knowledge-sharing frameworks that connect academia, industry, and policy
The AAU is also ensuring that African higher education institutions are not just passive participants but active drivers of the innovation agenda.
One of the most effective tools in this effort has been the introduction of Communities of Practice (CoPs). In 2026, the AAU launched three thematic CoPs under the AEIP framework, namely Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Commercialization of Innovative Products, and Climate Change and Sustainability Education.
These are not passive discussion forums. They are structured, outcome-driven platforms that bring together experts and practitioners to exchange insights, interrogate challenges, and co-develop actionable solutions.
Two of these CoPs have already been completed, producing policy briefs that distil key insights and recommendations. These outputs are expected to inform ongoing AU-EU engagements and influence policy and implementation at higher levels. In essence, the CoPs are turning conversation into policy-relevant knowledge and practical impact.
Recognizing that collaboration must be both inclusive and continuous, the AAU has embedded digital tools at the core of the CoP process. Dedicated LinkedIn groups for each thematic area have created vibrant, growing communities -each attracting over 100 members from across Africa and Europe. These platforms serve as breeding spaces for ongoing dialogue, channels for visibility and networking, and hubs for sustained engagement beyond formal sessions.
This is being complemented by the use of interactive Figma platforms, where participants actively contribute ideas, respond to structured prompts, and engage in collaborative problem-solving. This dual-platform approach does more than facilitate discussion – it ensures that every insight is captured, documented, and fed into a larger knowledge system.
While the Communities of Practice are a cornerstone of AAU’s work under the AEIP, the Association’s vision extends further. Through targeted training programmes, the AAU continues to strengthen institutional capacity and equip stakeholders with the tools needed to thrive in rapidly evolving innovation ecosystems. One such initiative, the upcoming Emerging Trends in Higher Education programme, reflects this broader commitment to future-ready skills development, institutional transformation, and sustainable knowledge systems. This integrated approach ensures that engagement is not episodic – but continuous, strategic, and forward-looking.
The Africa – Europe partnership in innovation and entrepreneurship is entering a decisive phase. With frameworks such as the AU–EU Innovation Agenda guiding the way, and platforms like AEIP enabling collaboration, the foundation for long-term impact is firmly in place.
With its sterling leadership, the AAU is helping to ensure that this partnership delivers on its promise: sustaining meaningful engagement, scaling successful initiatives, and embedding inclusivity at every level of innovation systems.
