The Association of African Universities continues to strengthen the global visibility and competitiveness of African universities by supporting institutions to position themselves more effectively within the global higher education landscape.
In an increasingly interconnected world, universities are required to move beyond their traditional roles of teaching and research to actively engage in global knowledge networks. Yet African universities continue to face a persistent visibility gap, with limited representation in global rankings and research outputs relative to the continent’s vast potential.
To address this challenge, the AAU has introduced a series of targeted capacity-building interventions under the Positioning Your University for Global Visibility workshops, designed to equip institutions with practical strategies to enhance their global presence, research impact, and institutional reputation.
Since its inception, the initiative has convened two successful editions, bringing together university leaders, researchers, and practitioners from across the continent to explore innovative approaches to global visibility.
The inaugural workshop, held in Accra from 6–8 May 2025, brought together 37 participants from nine countries. Sessions focused on key areas including transnational education, research visibility, and digital engagement, with emphasis on how cross-border academic programmes, open-access publishing, and strategic communication could enhance institutional positioning and foster global partnerships.
Building on this foundation, the second edition was held in Lusaka from 27–30 January 2026, in collaboration with the University of Lusaka. The workshop convened 61 participants from 30 institutions across 15 countries, further advancing discussions on digital visibility, research impact, and international competitiveness.
Across both editions, participants emphasised that global visibility required deliberate institutional effort, supported by clear strategies, strong digital presence, and sustained investment in research and partnerships.
Key focus areas included strengthening digital presence through institutional branding and online engagement, enhancing research visibility through open-access publishing and improved dissemination, leveraging transnational education to expand global partnerships, and aligning institutional strategies with evolving global higher education trends.
Expanding Impact: Upcoming Edition in Kenya
Building on the success of the first two editions, the AAU will host the third edition of the workshop in Kenya from 14–17 July 2026.
The upcoming workshop will further strengthen institutional capacity by focusing on strategic innovation, digital transformation, and partnerships as key drivers of global visibility. It will adopt a practical and interactive approach, combining expert-led sessions, case studies, and hands-on exercises to support participants in developing tailored institutional strategies.
The programme will be structured around three core modules:
- Digital Marketing and Communication, focusing on content creation, institutional branding, and student engagement;
- Artificial Intelligence and Digital Transformation, exploring the integration of emerging technologies in teaching, research, and institutional strategy;
- University – Industry Innovation Ecosystems, highlighting partnerships, incubation, and entrepreneurship as pathways to global competitiveness.
The workshop targets university leaders, policymakers, international office staff, researchers, and technical personnel, reflecting the need for a whole-of-institution approach to global visibility.
Through this initiative, the AAU is contributing to a broader effort to reposition African universities within the global knowledge ecosystem. By strengthening institutional capacity, promoting strategic partnerships, and supporting the adoption of innovative approaches, the workshops are enabling universities to enhance their visibility, relevance, and impact within the global knowledge ecosystem.
