The Effects of Massification on Higher Education in Africa

Africa has experience a dramatic escalation in the demand for higher education, beginning in the 1960s and continuing toddy.

This is partly in response to the relative success of the Education for All programmes implemented by many African countries, which resulted in very considerable expansions in primary and secondary enrolment and output.

The irresistible pressure of this rising demand, in the face of inadequate resources, has posed major problems for policy makers, was well as the leadership of higher education institutions.

The critical challenge is to ensure the quality and relevance of programmes and programmed delivery, while making higher education more widely accessible.

The book is a synthesis report based on detailed institutional reports prepared by teams of selected institutions on the basis of a set of agreed guidelines
